Open Dialogue - Slower

2022

In today’s progressively digital world, many contemporary artists and designers are still choosing to use analogue-based production methods within their practice, thoughtfully considering how the tools and materials chosen for the making process enhance the concept behind a body of work.

By using slower tools and technologies, practitioners are able to explore the visual properties particular to a process which often lack the uniformity and consistency of digital and computerised media. The imperfect aesthetic of printing and other forms of anachronistic production methods are increasingly appreciated by those who seek to exploit the ability to capture the active and physical sense of craftsmanship involved in the making.
.

My own interest in the combination of physical materials, slower tools and manual technologies within the design process led me to interview two different practitioners, Dafi Kühne and Sam Winston, both of whom explore similar ideas in their oeuvres. In each interview, I asked both of the designers similar questions, tailoring them slightly according to their relevance to the work.
