Jarring

2022

“Jarring aims to revive the traditions and methods used in the presevation
of food in today’s modern and more environmentally aware society. Many of
these skills have been lost as a result of today’s desire for convenience, although this
comes at a cost, both financially and environmentally”.

Jarring is a zine encouraging the population to preserve their own food at home to reduce
the amount of food they waste. The zine includes information about six different
methods of preservation, as well as including recipes for readers to make at home.
This publication was made in response for a university project titled, ‘Think Global, Act Local’ .

Throughout the zine, I used experimental type, photography and layouts to
make the content much more contemporary and engaging - I had hoped that this would
help to target younger audiences and inspire them to join the ‘Jarring’ movement.

Inspired by photographers such as Irving Penn and Daniel Spoerri, I directed my
own photography to be included in the magazine. My images were all black and white,
so all attention could be focused on the beautiful yet grotesque foodstuffs.

The zine was printed on double-sided A3 pieces of newsprint, adding to the aesthetic
and physical tactility of the publication.
